I remember walking through a mall in Bangkok for the first time, feeling completely lost in a sea of squiggly characters I couldn't read. I was hungry and looking for something familiar. Then I heard a woman at a kiosk say, "Sandwich mai ka?"

Sandwich? Wait, I know that word.

It turns out, Thai is full of these little easter eggs for English speakers. We call it "Thailish" (Thai + English). It’s not just slang; these are loan words that have been fully adopted into the language. If you speak English, you already know hundreds of Thai words—you just need to learn how to say them with a Thai accent.

Why Does Thai Have So Much English?

Unlike some countries that strictly protect their language, Thailand has historically been very open to foreign trade and modernization. As technology, western food, and pop culture arrived, the English words came with them.

It’s a huge confidence booster for beginners. Instead of memorizing a completely alien sound for "Computer," you just have to tweak the word "Computer" to fit Thai pronunciation rules.

The "Thailish" Accent Guide

The trick isn't just saying the English word; it's adapting it. Here are the main rules I learned:

  1. Drop the ending sounds: Thai doesn't really do hard ending consonants like 's', 'st', or 'ch'.
    • "Office" becomes
      ออฟฟิศO-fit
      .
    • "Tennis" becomes
      เทนนิสTen-nit
      .
  2. Add a vowel to clusters: Thai doesn't like smashing consonants together.
    • "Start" becomes
      สตาร์ทSa-tart
      .
  3. Tone it up: Thai is tonal. Usually, English loan words are spoken with a high tone at the end to emphasize they are foreign.

Common Words You Already Know

Here are some of the most useful ones I use daily:

Technology

  • คอมพิวเตอร์Com-pu-ter
    : Computer.
  • อินเทอร์เน็ตIn-ter-net
    : Internet.
  • ไวไฟWai-Fai
    : Wi-Fi. (Yes, seriously!)
  • แอปApp
    : Application.

Food

  • Coffee is
    กาแฟGaa-fae
    .
  • Burger is
    เบอร์เกอร์Ber-ger
    .
  • Ice Cream is
    ไอศกรีมAi-sa-kreem
    .
  • Chocolate is
    ช็อกโกแลตChok-ko-laet
    .

Lifestyle

  • แท็กซี่Tax-i
    : Taxi.
  • โฮเต็ลHo-tel
: Hotel (though the Thai word Rong-raem is also common).
  • Motorcycle is
    มอเตอร์ไซค์Mor-ter-sai
    .

Using Them in Context

The beauty is you can start using these immediately.

If you want to say "I use a computer":

  • ฉันChan
    (I)
    ใช้chai
    (use)
    คอมพิวเตอร์com-pu-ter
    .

If you want to say "Go to the bank":

  • ไปBpai
    (Go)
    แบงค์Bank
    .
  • Note: The formal word for bank is Thanakhan, but everyone understands "Bank".

A Fun Challenge

Next time you watch a Thai drama or listen to a Thai pop song, close your eyes and try to spot the English words. Once you start listening for them, you won't be able to un-hear them. It’s a reminder that languages aren't isolated islands; they mix and borrow constantly.

So don't be afraid to guess. If you don't know the Thai word for "Facebook" or "YouTube" or "Check-bill", just say the English word with a smile and a slight accent. 9 times out of 10, you'll be understood.

Start with what you know, and build from there.
