Devanagari (देवनागरी) is one of the most systematic writing systems in the world. Used for Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi, and Nepali, it represents sounds with scientific precision.

Once you understand the logic, the characters become much easier to learn.

Hindi Devanagari has 11 vowels and 33 consonants and 10 vowel signs with 6+ conjunct forms.

What Makes Devanagari Special

Unlike alphabets where letters are random shapes, Devanagari was designed with phonetic principles:

  • Consonants are grouped by articulation - where and how the sound is made
  • Each consonant has inherent "a" sound - क = "ka" not just "k"
  • Vowels attach to consonants - they don't float independently
  • The script reads left to right - with a distinctive headline (शिरोरेखा)

The Vowels (स्वर)

Hindi has independent vowels used at the beginning of words, plus vowel signs (matra) that attach to consonants.

LetterNameSound
अAa
आAaaa
इIi
ईIiii
उUu
ऊUuuu
ऋRr
एEe
ऐAiai
ओOo
औAuau

Vowel Signs (मात्रा)

When a vowel follows a consonant, it attaches as a sign:

SignNameWith क
ाका
िकि
ीकी
ुकु
ूकू
ृकृ
ेके
ैकै
ोको
ौकौ

Note: The sign for इ (ि) goes BEFORE the consonant visually, even though it's pronounced after.

The Consonants (व्यंजन)

Consonants are organized by place and manner of articulation:

LetterNamePronunciation
कKaka
खKhakha
गGaga
घGhagha
ङNganga
चChacha
छChhachha
जJaja
झJhajha
ञNyanya
टTtatta
ठTthattha
डDdadda
ढDdhaddha
णNnanna
तTata
थThatha
दDada
धDhadha
नNana

The consonants follow a systematic pattern across five articulation points: velar (throat), palatal (roof of mouth), retroflex (curled tongue), dental (teeth), and labial (lips).

The Aspirated vs. Non-Aspirated Pattern

Notice the pattern in each row:

  1. Plain (क, च, ट, त, प)
  2. Aspirated (ख, छ, ठ, थ, फ) - add breath
  3. Voiced (ग, ज, ड, द, ब)
  4. Voiced Aspirated (घ, झ, ढ, ध, भ)
  5. Nasal (ङ, ञ, ण, न, म)

This five-fold pattern repeats across articulation points.

Special Characters

Halant (विराम) - ्

Removes the inherent "a":

  • क = ka
  • क् = k (no vowel)

Used for consonant clusters: क् + र = क्र (kra)

Anusvara - ं

Nasalizes the vowel:

  • अ + ं = अं (aṁ)
  • हिंदी (hindī)

Chandrabindu - ँ

Nasal vowel marker:

  • हाँ (hā̃ - yes)

Visarga - ः

Breath sound:

  • दुःख (duḥkha - sorrow)

Conjunct Consonants (संयुक्त व्यंजन)

When consonants cluster without vowels between them, they combine into conjuncts:

Common Conjuncts (संयुक्त व्यंजन)

क्षksha
त्रtra
ज्ञjna
श्रshra
द्यdya
द्वdva

Special Behavior of र (ra)

र behaves specially in conjuncts:

  • र before consonant: र्क (rka) - mark above (repha)
  • र after consonant: क्र (kra) - leg below (rakar)

Learning Strategy

Week 1: Vowels + First Consonant Group

  1. Days 1-2: All 13 vowels (independent form)
  2. Days 3-4: Vowel signs (matra) with क
  3. Days 5-7: Velar consonants (क ख ग घ ङ)

Week 2: More Consonants

  1. Days 1-2: Palatal (च छ ज झ ञ)
  2. Days 3-4: Retroflex (ट ठ ड ढ ण)
  3. Days 5-7: Dental (त थ द ध न)

Week 3: Remaining + Practice

  1. Days 1-2: Labial (प फ ब भ म)
  2. Days 3-4: Semi-vowels and sibilants
  3. Days 5-7: Reading practice

Week 4: Conjuncts

Focus on common conjuncts found in everyday words.

Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting the Inherent Vowel

क = "ka" not "k"

To write just "k", you need the halant: क्

2. Wrong Matra Position

The इ matra (ि) goes visually before the consonant:

  • Wrong: कि (looks like consonant + sign)
  • Actually correct: कि (the hook is before क visually, but pronounced "ki")

3. Confusing Similar Characters

Often Confused
ख (kha) vs ष (ṣa)
ब (ba) vs व (va)
म (ma) vs भ (bha)
घ (gha) vs ध (dha)

Practice these pairs specifically.

4. Skipping the Headline

The शिरोरेखा (headline) connects letters in a word. Practice writing with the continuous line on top.

Writing Tips

Stroke Order Matters

Generally:

  1. Vertical strokes first
  2. Horizontal strokes (headline) last
  3. Vowel signs after the consonant

The Headline

Write individual characters, then connect with the headline. The headline helps distinguish where words begin and end.

Beyond the Basics

Once you know the individual characters:

  1. Practice reading - Children's books, signs, menus
  2. Learn common conjuncts - They appear everywhere
  3. Listen while reading - Connect sounds to symbols
  4. Write regularly - Muscle memory reinforces visual memory

Devanagari's logical structure makes it learnable. The challenge is consistent practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many letters are in the Hindi alphabet?

Devanagari, the script used for Hindi, has 13 vowels (स्वर) and 33 consonants. Vowels appear as independent letters at the start of a word and as attached signs (मात्रा) when they follow a consonant.

What is matra in Hindi?

Matra (मात्रा) are vowel signs attached to a consonant to show which vowel follows it, replacing the consonant's default inherent vowel. They're what makes Devanagari an abugida rather than a simple alphabet.

What does the halant symbol do in Hindi?

The halant, or viraam (्), removes a consonant's inherent vowel sound so it can combine directly with the next consonant, forming a conjunct. Without it, every consonant would default to carrying its own vowel.

What is a conjunct consonant in Hindi?

A conjunct consonant (संयुक्त व्यंजन) is formed when two or more consonants combine without a vowel between them, often changing shape to merge visually. The letter र (ra) behaves specially in these conjuncts compared to other consonants.

Is Devanagari only used for Hindi?

No. Devanagari is also the script for Sanskrit, Marathi, and Nepali, among other languages. Learning it for Hindi gives you a head start on reading those languages too, since the letterforms and rules carry over directly.
