Malayalam script is one of the most visually distinctive writing systems of South India. Its flowing, curved characters are used by 38 million speakers in Kerala and communities worldwide.

The script evolved from the ancient Grantha script and shares features with both Tamil and Sanskrit-derived languages.

Malayalam has 13 vowels and 36 consonants and 12 vowel signs with extensive conjunct forms.

Overview of Malayalam Script

Malayalam is an abugida - each consonant carries an inherent vowel (a) that can be modified. The script has more consonants than Tamil because it includes Sanskrit sounds.

The curved, rounded letter forms give Malayalam its distinctive appearance - quite different from the angular Devanagari or simplified Tamil.

The Vowels (സ്വരം)

Malayalam has 15 vowels, including some inherited from Sanskrit:

ആAaaa
ഇIi
ഈIiii
ഉUu
ഊUuuu
ഋRr
എEe
ഏEeee
ഐAiai
ഒOo
ഓOooo

Short vs Long Vowels

Like other Dravidian languages, Malayalam distinguishes between short and long vowels:

ShortLong
അ (a)ആ (ā)
ഇ (i)ഈ (ī)
ഉ (u)ഊ (ū)
എ (e)ഏ (ē)
ഒ (o)ഓ (ō)

The Consonants (വ്യഞ്ജനം)

Malayalam consonants follow the traditional Indic arrangement by articulation point:

LetterNamePronunciation
കKaka
ഖKhakha
ഗGaga
ഘGhagha
ങNganga
ചChacha
ഛChhachha
ജJaja
ഝJhajha
ഞNyanya
ടTtatta
ഠTthattha
ഡDdadda
ഢDdhaddha
ണNnanna
തTata
ഥThatha
ദDada

Consonant Groups

  1. Velar (throat): ക ഖ ഗ ഘ ങ
  2. Palatal (roof of mouth): ച ഛ ജ ഝ ഞ
  3. Retroflex (curled tongue): ട ഠ ഡ ഢ ണ
  4. Dental (teeth): ത ഥ ദ ധ ന
  5. Labial (lips): പ ഫ ബ ഭ മ
  6. Others: യ ര ല വ ശ ഷ സ ഹ ള ഴ റ

Vowel Signs (മാത്ര)

When vowels follow consonants, they attach as signs:

SignNameWith ക
ാകാ
ികി
ീകീ
ുകു
ൂകൂ
ൃകൃ
െകെ
േകേ
ൈകൈ
ൊകൊ
ോകോ
ൌകൌ

How Vowel Signs Work

With the consonant ക (ka):

  • ക + ാ = കാ (kā)
  • ക + ി = കി (ki)
  • ക + ു = കു (ku)
  • ക + െ = കെ (ke)
  • ക + ൈ = കൈ (kai)

This pattern applies consistently across all consonants.

Unique Features

The ഴ Sound (zha)

Malayalam shares with Tamil the unique ഴ sound - a retroflex approximant found nowhere else in Indian languages. It appears in the word മലയാളം (malayāḷam) itself.

Conjunct Consonants (കൂട്ടക്ഷരം)

When consonants cluster without vowels, they combine into conjuncts. Malayalam has extensive conjunct forms, especially for Sanskrit words:

  • ക്ക (kka)
  • ന്ന (nna)
  • ല്ല (lla)
  • മ്മ (mma)

Chillaksharam (ചില്ലക്ഷരം)

Malayalam has special final consonant forms called chillu letters:

ൺṇണ
ൻnന
ർrര
ൽlല
ൾḷള
ൿkക

These appear at the end of syllables without a following vowel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people speak Malayalam?

Malayalam is spoken by about 38 million people, mainly in the Indian state of Kerala. Its script is an abugida that evolved from the older Grantha script, which also gave rise to Tamil and several other South Indian scripts.

Why does Malayalam have more consonants than Tamil?

Malayalam kept consonants for Sanskrit sounds that Tamil's script dropped, since Malayalam absorbed more Sanskrit vocabulary over its history. This gives Malayalam a larger consonant inventory than its closest Dravidian relative.

What is a chillu letter in Malayalam?

Chillu letters (ചില്ലക്ഷരം) are special forms a consonant takes when it appears at the end of a syllable with no following vowel. They look different from the consonant's normal form and are one of the trickier parts of reading Malayalam.

What is the zha sound in Malayalam?

ഴ (zha) is a retroflex approximant sound that's distinctive to Malayalam and closely related Dravidian languages, and has no equivalent in English. It's one of the sounds learners usually need the most practice to produce accurately.
