Thai typing is straightforward once you learn the keyboard layout. Unlike Chinese or Japanese, there's no conversion step - you press a key and the Thai character appears directly.

The challenge: memorizing where 44 consonants, 32 vowels, and 4 tone marks live on the keyboard.

The Kedmanee Layout

Most Thai speakers use the Kedmanee (เกษมณี) layout, designed in 1932. It's the default on all devices.

Key Principles

  • Consonants occupy most keys
  • Vowels and tone marks use Shift combinations
  • Frequently used characters are easier to reach
  • Similar characters are often near each other

The Layout (Simplified)

Without Shift - mainly consonants:

ๅ / _ ภ ถ ุ ึ ค ต จ ข ช
   ไ ำ พ ะ ั ี ร น ย บ ล
      ฟ ห ก ด เ ้ ่ า ส ว

With Shift - more vowels, tone marks, special characters:

+ ๑ ๒ ๓ ๔ ู ฿ ๕ ๖ ๗ ๘ ๙
   ๆ " ฑ ๎ ํ ๊ ณ ฯ ญ ฐ ,
      ฤ ็ ฏ โ ฌ ๋ ษ ศ ซ .

Setting Up Thai Input

Windows

  1. Settings → Time & Language → Language
  2. Add Thai
  3. Select "Thai Kedmanee" keyboard
  4. Switch with Win + Space

macOS

  1. System Preferences → Keyboard → Input Sources
  2. Add Thai
  3. Switch with Ctrl + Space or menu bar

Mobile

Add Thai keyboard in Settings. Most phones use the standard Kedmanee layout.

Learning Strategy

Phase 1: Home Row Consonants

Start with the most common consonants in the home position:

KeyThaiNameSound
fกgor gaig/k
hดdor dekd/t
jเvowel ee
k้mai thofalling tone
l่mai eklow tone

Phase 2: Common Vowels

[shift] hโbefore consonant
uุbelow consonant
iึbelow consonant

Phase 3: Tone Marks

KeyThaiTone
k้falling (mai tho)
l่low (mai ek)
[shift] l๋high (mai tri)
[shift] k๊rising (mai chattawa)

Phase 4: All Consonants

Work through the remaining consonants systematically. Group by position on keyboard.

Vowel Placement Rules

Thai vowels go in different positions relative to the consonant:

Before Consonant

Type the vowel first, then the consonant:

TypeGet
เ + กเก
แ + กแก
โ + กโก

After Consonant

Type consonant first, then vowel:

TypeGet
ก + ากา
ก + ำกำ

Above Consonant

Same as after - type consonant, then vowel:

TypeGet
ก + ิกิ
ก + ีกี
ก + ึกึ

Below Consonant

Same pattern:

TypeGet
ก + ุกุ
ก + ูกู

Surrounding Consonant

Some vowels surround the consonant. Type in this order:

TypeGet

Typing Tips

1. Don't Look at the Keyboard

Use typing tutors that hide the keyboard. Looking builds dependence.

2. Practice Common Combinations

Certain consonant-vowel combinations appear constantly:

  • กา (gaa)
  • ที่ (thee)
  • ของ (khong)
  • ได้ (dai)

3. Watch Tone Mark Placement

Tone marks go on the consonant, not the vowel:

  • ก้า (correct)
  • ก ้ า (wrong spacing)

4. Learn Clusters

Some consonant clusters are typed often:

  • กร (gr)
  • คร (kr)
  • ทร (tr)
  • พร (pr)

5. Use Both Hands

Shift is your friend. Train your pinky finger to hit Shift smoothly.

Alternative: Pattachote Layout

The Pattachote (ปัตตะโชติ) layout was designed for speed typing. It places:

  • Most common characters on strongest fingers
  • Vowels on left hand, consonants on right
  • Balanced workload between hands

It's faster for professionals but less common. Most learners should stick with Kedmanee since:

  • It's on every device
  • Most teaching materials use it
  • You can type on any Thai computer

Common Mistakes

1. Wrong Vowel Position

Wrong: าก (vowel before when it should be after) Right: กา

Remember: เ, แ, โ go BEFORE the consonant when typing. Others go after.

2. Missing Tone Marks

Thai spelling requires tone marks even when predictable:

  • ก่อน (before) - not กอน
  • น้ำ (water) - not นำ

3. Confusing Similar Characters

Often ConfusedDifferent Characters
บ vs ปb vs p sound
พ vs ผdifferent consonant class
ส vs ศ vs ษsame sound, different spelling

4. Forgetting ห นำ

Some words need a leading ห to change tone:

  • หมา (dog) - not มา (come)
  • หนา (thick) - not นา (rice field)

Speed Building Exercises

Beginner: Single Keys

Type each consonant row 10 times without looking.

Intermediate: Common Words

Type a list of 50 common words. Time yourself. Repeat until smooth.

Advanced: Sentences

Copy Thai text from news or books. Focus on accuracy first, then speed.

Expert: Blind Typing

Turn off the screen or close your eyes. Type from memory.
